Synthesis of potassium chlorochromate (Peligot’s salt)

Preparation of potassium chlorochromate

100 g powdered potassium dichromate are  gently heated in a flask with a mixture of 100 ml of water and 130 g pure fuming (37-40%) hydrochloric acid. As soon as potassium dichromate is dissolved, the solution is filtered and allowed to settle. Next day, the crystals are separated from the mother liquor by decantation and dried in a desiccator.
