Preparation of chloromethane

100 grams of anhydrous zinc chloride are dissolved in 200 grams of methyl alcohol and the reaction flask is attached to reflux condenser. The top of reflux condenser is further connected to washing bottle containing water and drying tubes filled with CaCl2.  In the beginning, the reaction mixture is heated gently and later the reaction generates heat by itself. The reaction begins with the evaluation of a vigorous stream of hydrogen chloride yielding chloromethane and some side products – a black tarry mass. The escaping chloromethane gas is washed with water in order to separate from hydrochloric acid and methyl alcohol. Additionally, the obtained chloromethane gas is dried with calcium chloride and condensed in a cold mixture of dry ice and ether. Methyl alcohol dissolves large quantities of chloromethane.

40.5 ml of methanol are added during 30 min to a stirred mixture of 140.6 g of benzoyl chloride, 18 g of dimethylformamide and 1 g of pyridine at 20-25° C. Methyl chloride (17.81 g, 81 %) is evolved in a steady stream.
