Preparation of benzyl iodide
To the flask equipped with a reflux condenser and stirrer 150 ml 95% ethyl alcohol, 20 g benzyl bromide and 25 g potassium iodide are placed. The flask is gently warmed to 50-60° C with continual stirring. The heating is continued for half an hour. Benzyl iodide is poured into water washed and crystallized by means of a freezing mixture. Benzyl iodide is collected and purified by crystallization from alcohol. The product is insoluble in water, soluble in alcohol, ether and benzene and slightly soluble in carbon disulfide and forms colorless crystals melting at 24.1° C.
