Preparation of 4-tert-butylbenzenesulfonic acid
To 40 grams of tert-butylbenzene in a round-bottomed flask in the course of 20 minutes are slowly treated with 45 ml of fuming sulfuric acid containing 15% of sulfur trioxide. During the addition of the oleum the temperature is maintained below 25° C and with frequent shaking. Then the mixture is slowly heated to a temperature of 8o° C with constant stirring. The layer of oil (tert-butylbenzene) should be completely dissolved by this time. The reaction mixture is poured into 300 ml of water, the acid is partially neutralized by adding carefully 15 grams of sodium bicarbonate, the solution is filtered in order to remove any particles of char. To salt out the s4-tert-butylbenzenesulfonic acid sodium salt, add 30 grams of clean sodium chloride are added and the solution is heated until the solid is all dissolved. The solution is cooled thoroughly in an ice bath, the crystalline product is collected, washed well with a saturated solution of sodium chloride. 4-tert-butylbenzenesulfonic acid sodium salt is dried thoroughly in an oven at 120° C yielding salt with one molecule of water of crystallization, which melts at 240° C. 4-tert-butylbenzenesulfonic acid is obtained from sodium 4-(tert-butyl)benzenesulfonate by neutralizing with stereochemical amount of acid and extracting the base with ether, which is removed by evaporation.
