Preparation of 1-chloro-3-buten-2-ol

A 6:1 mixture of butadiene and carbon dioxide is led into a stirred 3.5% solution of 0.845 mole of calcium hypochloride at 0-3° C. The reaction is complete after 1.8 hours as can be recognized by failure of a sample to oxidize potassium iodide. The calcium carbonate is filtered off and the solution saturated with sodium chloride and extracted with ether. The ether is dried and removed by evaporation. The yield is 52% and the b.p. 64.0 6-4.8° C/30 mmHg.
