Preparation of 1-bromo-1-hexyne
25 ml of bromine are dropped into a solution of 180 g of potassium hydroxide in 800 ml of water with vigorous stirring, producing a solution that is about O.55N in potassium hypobromite and 2N in free potassium hydroxide. 45 g of 1-hexyne are added to the alkaline potassium hypobromite solution and the whole reaction mixture is stirred for 18 hours. The organic phase is taken up in light petroleum and dried over sodium sulfate. Vacuum-distillation yiedls 72% of 1-bromo-1-hexyne, b.p. 40-41°/15 mmHg.
