Preparation of 1-methoxynaphthalene
10 g of 1-naphthol are dissolved in 40 g of 10% sodium hydroxide solution, and the cooled liquid mixed with 8 ml of dimethyl sulphate, with continuous shaking. Gentle warming may be needed to start the reaction. The 1-methoxynaphthalene separates as a solid which is filtered off after boiling and making alkaline if necessary, with sodium hydroxide, precipitate filtered at the pump, and well washed with water. It is dissolved in ether, filtered, the ether removed on a water bath, and the residue recrystallised from dilute alcohol. Yield almost theoretical. Lustrous plates; insoluble in water; soluble in ether and in hot alcohol; m.p. 71° C.
