Preparation of sodium dichloroiodate

Sodium dichloroiodate is prepared as 2M-soIution. 520g of powdered iodine are suspended in a solution containing 500g of  sodium chloride in 1200 ml water, and gaseous chlorine (142 g) is passed in with stirring at room temperature (3.5 hours). The mixture is stirred for a further hour, the excess of iodine is filtered off and washed with a little water, and the sodium dichloroiodate solution is made up to 2 liters. 1 ml of prepared sodium dichloroiodate solution should consume 40 ml of 0.1N-sodium thiosulfate after addition of potassium iodide.
