Synthesis of sodium nitrite

Preparation of sodium nitrite

Preparation of sodium nitrite

Preparation of sodium nitrite

85 g of sodium nitrate and 207 g of elemental lead in an iron dish are heated while stirring with an iron spatula. The heating is continued until all the lead is oxidized, to lead oxide. The oxidation process may take 30-60 min. After the reaction is complete , the mass is cooled while still with iron spatula stirring is continued in order to obtain the mass in small loose lumps. The sodium nitrite is extracted with 300 ml of hot water and then twice more with 100 ml. To precipitate the lead which has gone into the solution as plumbite, carbon dioxide is passed for a few minutes. The solution is filtered and neutralized cautiously with a very little dilute nitric acid. The solution containing sodium nitrite is evaporated to a small volume to obtain crystals, filtered, washed with alcohol. The mother-liquor could be evaporated again to obtain more crystals. Yield of sodium nitrite is 40-50 g.
