Preparation of pyruvic acid phenylhydrazone

5 g of penylhydraze are disolved in  5 g of glacial acetic acid and  5 ml of water added. 2 g of puruvic acid are added, and the mixture shaken. The precipitate after filtration is washed with dilute acetic acid. It may be recrystallised from alcohol. Yield theoretical, yellow needles; m.p. 192° C.
