61 grams of potassium chlorate are placed in a dry, clean 100 ml porcelain crucible, the glaze of which is in perfect condition. The crucible is covered in order to prevent loss of particles of the salt by decrepitation and gently heated until the potassium chlorate just melts. When the potassium chlorate starts to melt the cover is removed and the heat is kept to maintain a brisk evolution of oxygen. During this process overheating should be avoided when the mass shows a tendency to solidify. At the end of about 20 minutes, the melt should begin to stiffen around the edges and become more or less pasty or semi-solid throughout. At this point, the thermal decomposition reaction is complete. The crucible is cooled and the crude mass is treated with 200 ml of water. Undissolved potassium perchlorate is separated from soluble potassium chloride by filtering and washing it with two successive portions of 15 ml of cold water. Potassium perchlorate is purified by crystallization from hot water. Yield is about 30 grams. A few crystals of potassium perchlorate should give no yellow color of chlorine when treated with a few drops of concentrated hydrochloric acid. Also, potassium perchlorate should be entirely free from chloride ions.
