Synthesis of nitric oxide

Preparation of nitric oxide

A Woulff’s bottle, fitted with a funnel and delivery tube, is filled loosely with strips of copper, and then 1/3 with a cold saturated solution of sodium nitrate. Strong sulfuric acid is added, according to the amount of gas required. The evolution of gas is very regular, and may be kept up for hours.

Nitric oxide may also be prepared from a mixture of solutions of potassium ferrocyanide and potassium nitrite added gradually from a stoppered funnel to a flask containing acetic acid. During the addition the contents of the flask must be vigorously shaken during the operation.

By another method a strong solution of sodium nitrite is added to a solution of ferrous chloride or sulfate in hydrochloric acid.
