Preparation of lithium diisopropylamide

A solution of 0.055 mol of butyllithium in 38 ml of hexane is added under the inert atmosphere to a flask in which 40 ml of diethyl ether or tetrahydrofuran are placed and cooled to below 0 °C. Subsequently a mixture of 5.5 g (0.055 mol) of diisopropylamine and 20 ml of tetrahydrofuran or diethyl ether is added dropwise over a few minutes. Temperature control during this addition is not essential; however, the obtained solution may be cooled to 0 °C or lower. The formation of lithium diisopropylamide is very fast, even in the temperature range – 20 to – 60°C, so that the obtained solution obtained can be used for further syntheses after only a few minutes.
