Preparation of Lindane

Other names: Hexachlorocyclohexane, Hora-Blitz, Hortex, Jakusit, Nexit, Parex, Wendelinus Pulver   Hexachlorocyclohexane is a mixture of 9 different isomers while the gamma isomer is called Lindane. All isomes are very potent and dangerous agricultural insecticides; the most effective beeing the previously mentioned Lindane. Be careful, as these compounds are cumulative poisons!

For the synthesis of hexachlorocyclohexane, assemble the following apparatus: A two necked, round bottom flask, equipped with a pressure equalizing addition funnel and gas takeoff is charged with 10g of Potassium permangante. To the addition funnel, 60 milliliters of 38% by weight hydrochloric acid (d=1.2g/ml) is added. The gas takeoff of this flask is connected to an unfritted gas washing bottle filled with 20 milliliters of benzene (watch out for the right orientation of the gas washing bottle!). The other side of the wash bottle is connected to an empty safety-wash bottle (to prevent suckback!). Finally, the other side of the safety wash bottle is connected to a fritted gas washing bottle containing 5g of Sodium thiosulfate dissolved in 50 milliliters of water (antichlor). The apparatus is placed in strong sunlight or into the light of a 60W lamp. Now, slowly allow the Hydrochloric acid to drip onto the Potassium permangante crystals. This generates copious amounts of yellow-green chlorine gas. The chlorine, when allowed to bubble through the benzene, adds to the latter as the ultra-violet light produces chlorine radicals. The remaining amount of chlorine is neutralized by the Sodium thiosulfate solution in the last flask. Regulate the stream of chlorine gas, so that most of it reacts with the benzene. When all the Chlorine has been liberated from the Hydrochloric acid, place the gas washing bottle into an ice-salt bath. This precipitates nice crystals of Lindane (Hexachlorocyclohexane). Vacuum filter the crystals from the remaining benzene and store them in a tightly stoppered bottle. Avoid exposure to air, water and light as the Hexachlorocyclohexane will break down into Phosgene, Diphosgene and other undisered products. To test the insecticidal properties of the product, dissolve a small amount of the crystals in Methanol and add a few drops of the so obtained solution to a filter paper. Place this filter paper under a large cylinder, standing upside down, in which a few flys or other insects were introduced. A reference test may also be conducted without the Lindane but with the Methanol to prove that the Lindane causes the flys to die and not the Methanol.
