Preparation of ethylene glycol

94 g ethylene bromide, 69 g pure potassium carbonate, and 500 ml water are boiled under reflux condenser for about 10 hours, until all the ethylene bromide has disappeared. When the oil has disappeared the aqueous solution is evaporated in vacuo from a bath containing water at about 50° C. The obtained dry crystalline mass is extracted twice with absolute alcohol, filtered, and the alcoholic filtrate is again evaporated in vacuo. The residue is immediately fractionated, preferably at ordinary pressure from an oil-bath collecting fraction boiling at 197° C. The yield of ethylene glycol is 9-10 g.
