Preparation of copper(I) bromide (cuprous bromide)
Copper(I) bromide may be prepared by dissolving 150 grams of copper sulfate pentahydrate and 87.5 grams of sodium bromide dihydrate (NaBr · 2H2O) in 600 ml of warm water. To the obtained solution, 38 grams of powdered sodium sulfite are added over a period of 5-10 minutes while stirring. The reduction is not complete if the blue color is not completely discharged. In such case, a little more sodium sulfite should be added. The mixture is then cooled, the obtained precipitate of copper(I) bromide is collected by filtration, washed twice with water containing a little dissolved sulfurous acid, pressed with a glass stopper to remove most of the liquid, and finally dried at 100-120° C. The yield of copper(I) bromide is about 80 g.
A solution of copper(I) bromide may be prepared by dissolving the solid in hot constant boiling point hydrobromic acid. Additionally copper(I) bromide solution is prepared by refluxing a mixture of 20 grams of copper turnings, 63 grams of copper sulfate pentahydrate, 30 grams (or 16,3 ml) of concentrated sulfuric acid, 154 grams of sodium bromide dihydrate (NaBr · 2H2O) in 1 litre of water for 3-4 hours. If the color of the solution has not become yellowish after this period of heating, additionally, a few grams of sodium sulfite should be added to complete the reduction.
