Boron is prepared by reduction of boron trioxide with aluminum.

Proceed as for silicon, using 50 g of dry boron trioxide, 75 g of sulfur, and 100 g of aluminum. About 7.5 g of black metallic crystals (which scratch glass) are obtained. The thinnest crystals show a dark-red color by transmitted light.
