Preparation of benzenediazonium sulfate (benzenediazonium hydrogen sulfate)

Preparation of benzenediazonium sulfate (benzenediazonium hydrogen sulfate)

5 ml (or 5 g) of aniline are dissolved in 50 ml of warm dilute sulfuric acid and 50 ml of water. The solution is stirred and cooled with ice and water until the temperature of the stirred solution falls to 5° C. A solution of 4.5 g of powdered sodium nitrite in 20 ml of water is added dropwise to the cold aniline sulfate solution. During the addition the temperature is maintained at about 5° C and obtained benzenediazonium sulfate solution must be kept in ice-water until required.
