Synthesis of basic lead chromate

Preparation of basic lead chromate

Basic lead chromate is prepared by treating lead chromate with sodium hydroxide. In general, basic salts do not have definite composition but are indefinite mixtures of base and salt. This is true of basic lead chromate in which the ratio of lead(II) oxide to lead chromate varies with the method of preparation.

Preparation of basic lead chromate

Preparation of basic lead chromate

38 grams of lead acetate are dissolved (the solution will not be clear) in 400 ml of water in a porcelain dish. 8 grams of sodium dichromate (or equivalent amount of potassium chromate) are dissolved in 50 ml of water and added to the solution of lead acetate. Immediately yellow lead chromate will precipitate. In order to obtain basic lead chromate 12 grams of sodium hydroxide are dissolved in 50 ml of water, the solutions are mixed and heated to boiling. The color of the solid will slowly change to a reddish orange. The mixture is gently heated until no further change in color takes place. Then the mixture is poured into a liter of cold water by allowing the precipitate to settle. The basic lead chromate is washed three times by decantation, transferred to a filter and left to drain without suction. When the cake is dry enough to hold its shape basic lead chromate is removed and dried. Finally, basic lead chromate is pulverized and preserved in a stoppered bottle.
