Preparation of elemental antimony by reduction of antimony sulfide with iron
An intimate mixture of 25 g antimony trisulfide – Sb2S3 (stibnite), 11 g iron powder or filings, 2.6 g anhydrous sodium sulfate, and 0.5 g charcoal is placed in a covered crucible and heated about 20 minutes with a Meker burner so that the fusion mixture softens but does not quite melt. This is determined by momentarily stirring with an iron rod. The melt is allowed to cool and the crucible is broken. A mass of crude fused antimony weighing about 15 g is found at the bottom; this is mechanically cleaned and then washed with hot water.
Preparation of elemental antimony by reduction antimony pentoxide with potasium cyanide
Equal weights of antimony pentoxide (Sb2O5) and pure potassium cyanide are heated in a crucible over a Meker burner for about one-half hour. The regulus are washed with hot water for the removal of impurities.
Preparation of elemental antimony from antimony oxychloride and potassium cyanide
To prepare antimony oxychloride (SbOCl), 50 g of antimony trichloride (SbCl3) are stirred well with 35 ml of water and allowed to stand for 2-3 days. The white product is filtered off, washed with 50 ml of 95% alcohol and with the same volume of ether. The material is dried at 100°C. Yield, about 36 g. SbOCl is fused with twice its weight of potassium cyanide by heating heated in a crucible over a Meker burner for about one-half hour. The regulus are washed with hot water for the removal of impurities. Yield of antimony is about 85%.
