Synthesis of ammonium chloride

Preparation of ammonium chloride

Ammonium chloride may be readily preparared from pure diluted hydrochloric acid and pure ammonium hydroxide:

Preparation of ammonium chloride

Preparation of ammonium chloride

One part of ammonium hydroxide is gradually added to the 2 parts of hydrochloric acid with constant stirring. The solution is evaporated until crystallization of NH4Cl appears, cooled to room temperature and dried. To obtain very pure NH4Cl 200 g of crude ammonium chloride is dissolved in the 300 ml of boiling water. To this solution 10 g of chlorine water and the solution is heated for 20 minutes with proper stirring. Finally 10 g of 10% ammonium hydroxide is added and boiling continued for a few minutes. The solution of ammonium chloride is filtered, evaporated to granulation and dried thoroughly. Pure ammonium chloride is a colorless crystalline, or a white, granular salt. It is soluble in 3 parts of water of 15°, and in its own weight of boiling water. Nearly insoluble in alcohol. Decomposes to ammonia and hydrochloric acid when strongly heated:
