Preparation of ammonium azide

Ammonium azide is prepared by subliming an intimate mixture of 2 g of dry sodium azide and 2.5 g of dry ammonium nitrate at 190° C in a simple sublimation apparatus by passing dry air or nitrogen for 30-40 min. The yield of ammonium azide is over 93%.
