Preparation of 4-fluorobenzaldehyde

A mixture of 7.0 g of 4-chlorobenzaldchyde, 4.4 g of spray-dried potassium fluoride, 2.1 g of tetraphenylphosphonium bromide (Ph4PBr) and 1.3 g of 18-crown-6 are placed in a 50-ml, three-necked, round-bottomed flask fitted with a mechanical stirrer and reflux condenser. The reaction flask is immersed in an oil bath maintained at 230° C and the mixture was stirred for 4.5 hours. When the reaction is complete the mixture is cooled to room temperature and diluted with 50 ml of dichloromethane. After filtration and the dichloromethane is removed in by evaporation, the residue is distilled collecting fraction boiling at 71-74.15 Torr. Yield is 4.5 g or 73%.
