Preparation of 2-chloro-4-(hydroxymethyl)phenol
2-Chloro-4-(hydroxymethyl)phenol is obtained by boiling 2-chloro-4-(chloromethyl)phenol with water. After cooling, it is extracted with ether, and the ether removed by distillation. A clear yellow oil remains which becomes crystalline when the sides of the vessel are scratched. It is recrystallised from benzene, and forms colourless needles which melt at 123° C.
