Preparation of 2-chloro-2-methyl-3-nitrosobutane

50 ml of ice-cold fuming hydrochloric acid are dropped during 1.5 hours into a stirred mixture of 30 g of 2-methyl-2-butene and 50 ml of pentyl nitrite kept below 0° C by ice-salt cooling. The mixture becomes blue at once and gradually solidifies to a mass of colorless crystals. The crystals are left in the cold for 30 min and then filtered off under suction and washed with ice-cold ethanol. The yield is 29 g and the m.p. 76° C.
