Preparation of 1,3-dithian-5-ol

A solution of 4 g of sodium borohydride dissolved in 50 ml of water is dropwise added into a stirred solution of 30 g of 1,3-dithian-5-one (prepared according A. Luttringhaus et al., Ann. Chem., 624, 79 (1959).) in 300 ml ether within 30 min. When all sodium borohydride as been added the mixture is stirred at room temperature for an hour, then poured on ice, and neutralized with dilute sulfuric acid. The ethereal phase is separated, and the aqueous phase is extracted in a Steudel apparatus with ether. The combined extracts are washed with water and dried over sodium sulfate, and the ether is removed. The obtained residue yields 25 g (or 83%) of colorless needles. Purification by crystallization from ether/light petroleum (b.p. 60-80°) yields 1,3-dithian-5-ol with melting point 63-64° C.
