Preparation of 1-amino-2-methylnaphthalene

A mixture of 25 g. of 1-nitro-2-methylnaphthalene and 5 g. of Raney nickel catalyst in 75 ml. of ethanol is agitated under a hydrogen pressure of 1-3 atm. until the calculated amount of hydrogen has been absorbed. The catalyst is removed by filtration, and the filtrate is distilled to give 19.5 g. (93%) of the amine, b.p. 111-113°/0.3 mm., m.p. 31°.
