650 ml bromine (1.8 moles per 1 mole of acetone) are slowly added dropwise to a mixture containing 500 ml of acetone, 1600 ml of water, and 375 ml of glacial acetic acid at 70°. After the reaction is complete fraction distillation yields 20 g 1,1-dibromoacetone, 473 g of 1,3-dibromoacetone (b.p. 97-98°/21-22 mm), and 60 g of monobromoacetone (b.p. 137 °C).
