Preparation of 1,2-dichloroethyl ethyl ether
A 2 l flask is fitted a reflux condenser, an inlet tube for chlorine and an efficient mechanical stirrer and charged with 800 g of dry ether while kept cold by a surrounding bath of ice and water. The ether is stirred and a slow stream of chlorine is introduced for 35 hours. In the beginning of reaction the specific gravity is 0.785 (at 25° C) and hydrogen chloride begins to be evolved freely. After 35 hours the temperature is then allowed to rise-gradually to that of the room and at the end of 65 hours the specific gravity of the reaction mixture is 0.89, and after 82 hours, 0.96. When 0.96 value of the specific gravity is reached the chlorination is stopped at this point. The unchanged ether is distilled off under reduced pressure and the remaining material is purified by fractionated yielding 375 g of 1,2-dichloroethyl, boiling from 66-69° C at 45 mm.
