Preparation of 6-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-heptanone
A mixture of 6-methyl-5-hepten-2-one and 35% sulfuric acid is shaken under nitrogen for 9 hours at room temperature, then kept in a refrigerator overnight, diluted with ice-water, and carefully neutralized with aqueous sodium hydroxide below 5°C. Exhaustive extraction with
ether and working up by distillation gives an 85% yield of the 6-hydroxy-6-methyl-2-heptanone, b.p. 100 to 102°/7 mm.
