Preparation of 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)-1,3,5-triazine
500 g of 2,4,6-tris(trichloromethyl)-1,3,5-triazine are added during 4 hours, in increasingly large portions, to a hot stirred mixture of 800g of antimony trifluoride and 105 g of antimony trichloride into which gaseous chlorine (100 g) had previously been passed at 150° C. The apparatus is fitted with a column and reflux condenser. The mixture is kept just boiling after the addition is complete for 30-120 min. Then a start is made with removing two fractions at a reflux ratio of 10:1, namely, one of b.p. 98-105° C (43 g) and a second of b.p. 105-125° C (153 g). The second fraction is fluorinated again with a chlorine-saturated mixture of antimony trifluoride (500 g) and antimony trichloride (105 g); higher-boiling fractions from subsequent distillations are also refluorinated. The total yield of 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)-1,3,5-triazine is about 49 % (160 g) b.p. 98-100° C.
